Parents worldwide confess that they could do more to halt the rise of childhood obesity which threatens the health of a generation, but are you doing much about it?
GKA is looking at setting up a special programme New Zealand wide which we look to call "Fruity Friday", which includes supplying fruit to all children every Friday to increase the amount of healthy foods being eaten every day.
It has been proven that most parents do not know that eating fruit and vegetables, taking regular exercise and watching their weight can reduce the risk of developing cancer by as mush as 40%.
The disturbing findings reflect earlier research in Wales which has revealed low-levels of awareness of the five-a-day message - one of the key healthy living commandments - and ignorance among parents about their children's weight.
One in three people in the UK are now overweight and one in five is obese - obesity levels have increased ten-fold in the last 20 years worldwide.
Some research has found that 8% of girls and 5% of boys are obese by the time they are five - double the number from 16 years ago.
GKA believes that this has been caused by a combination of less physical activity than 16 years ago. Children prefer more sedentary activities like watching television or playing computer games, and an energy intensive diet, caused by more access to fat and refined carbohydrates.
Another worrying thing that has emerged over the years is that parents often do not perceive their children to be overweight, when in fact they are. They almost regard it as normal to be overweight, particularly when parents are overweight themselves. They don't identify that there is anything wrong.
