New Zealand researchers have confirmed links between asthma and the obesity epidemic.
A long-term Dunedin-based study of about 1000 people has produced strong evidence of the association in females aged over 9. The researchers estimate that 28 per cent of new asthma cases in girls and women over 9 are due to being overweight.
New Zealand's rates of obesity and asthma are rising rapidly. GetKidsActive.com is trying to work with NZ Asthma Associations to link up and try to put a stop to these 2 rising epidemics. To join the fight click here.
The ones that have had asthma since childhood don't become overweight. Therefore it's not the asthma that causes the overweight; it's something about becoming overweight during adolescence or later that seems to bring on the asthma. This is why we need to fight the obesity epidemic from a young age and keep asthma under control. GKA is doing its best to educate parents on the seriousness of obesity and kids staying active. We are about to start up a parent education scheme. If you are keen to come to a session or want to know more information please email us here.
