Whacky Word Works is a collection of Language Enrichment Games.

Keeping children’s minds active is something we should encourage at every opportunity in our classroom programme, especially in Language. 

The Whacky Word Works - resource pack is a bagged set of 40 A4 cards, which is a compendium of practical language games. They can be played in pairs, groups or as a class. The pack comes complete with a checklist of the language skills covered by each game.

As a teacher you may look towards these games as a way of setting the children free to enjoy the use of language in a variety of contextual situations. They have all been trialled by my own children, and children I have taught over the last 10 year with huge success and fun.

Many of the games allow the children to diversify their language thinking by inviting them to use lateral thinking and humour in their playing of the games.  Children who can play with words and meaning are becoming skilled in their knowledge of, and use of language.  A number of games in this book allow children to play with language conventions.

You should try to incorporate these games into your classroom culture and programme rather than merely using them as “fill ins”, when there is time at the end of your lesson, however they can be used this way and often children will look forward to this time also.

This pack of games is an attempt to demonstrate to children that you can learn about language and have fun at the same time!
